Australian home education is regulated by states and territories while a child is resident or present in Australia. If your family is genuinely living or travelling outside Australia and the child is no longer resident or present in an Australian state or territory, those state registration requirements do not follow the child overseas simply because they are Australian.

A short trip does not necessarily end residence or an existing registration. Before leaving, tell your state or territory authority what you are actually doing and ask whether registration, reporting or notification continues. Ask: “Does my home jurisdiction’s requirement follow my child abroad?” US rules are state-based; England’s published guidance states the parent’s duty but does not give one answer for every overseas arrangement; New Zealand asks families to report overseas travel; and South African registration is handled through provincial departments. Ask the responsible authority in writing and check the destination’s rules if you become resident there.

Usually, choose for continuity rather than the current view from the window. Consider where your child is registered or resident, the system they may return to and any later qualification requirements.
